Today's theme: control is quietly changing hands. Google is formalizing AI's authority over your campaigns, the data vendors are consolidating into each other, and the research keeps saying the same thing — the teams that own their data are running away with it.
Six things worth your next four minutes.
Google Ads hands the keys to AI — and starts a clock on manual controls
Google's updated Advertising Program Terms took effect July 1, explicitly authorizing Google to use automated features to format, select, and generate targets, ads, and destinations on your behalf — headlines, URLs, audience segments, the whole creative stack. It's part of a phased rollout with an auto-upgrade in September 2026 and a sunset of manual controls slated for February 2027.
Why it matters: This is the difference between "AI is a feature you can try" and "AI is the default and you have 18 months to adapt." If your paid team's competitive edge is manual bid and match-type craft, that edge has an expiration date. Start building the muscle that actually survives: feeding the machine better inputs — clean conversion data, sharp audience definitions, and brand context via tools like AI Brief.
ZoomInfo and DemandScience pair up on data plus execution
Announced July 29: DemandScience is rebuilding its insights and outcomes suite to plug into ZoomInfo's platform, layering its contextual marketing-outcomes data on top of ZoomInfo's data architecture. The pitch is a continuum — ZoomInfo customers can activate market intelligence through DemandScience's multi-channel demand gen services without leaving the stack.
Why it matters: The data-provider category is admitting that data alone doesn't close the loop. Expect more "intelligence + activation" bundles, and expect your renewal conversations to include services you didn't ask for. Worth asking your rep what this changes about attribution and data ownership before it's decided for you.
The "Data Heroes" beat everyone else by 25 points
Anteriad's 2026 B2B Marketing Edge report, run with Ascend2 across 631 marketing decision-makers in the US, UK, and APAC, found that marketers with strong, intentional data foundations significantly exceeded their goals at a 43% rate — versus 18% for everyone else. Three disciplines separated the winners: data quality, buying-group strategy, and full-funnel attribution. Only 41% said they frequently reallocate spend based on live performance data.
Why it matters: That 41% number is the real story. Most teams have dashboards; far fewer actually move budget because of them. If you want one Q3 resolution, make it a standing monthly reallocation meeting with teeth.
Encore AI raises $30M for agents that sell instead of deflect
Encore AI closed a $30M Series A led by Team8, Planven, and The Garage — with participation from banks and insurers that started as customers and then wrote checks. The product uses what the company calls Interaction Mining: study your top performers, isolate the behaviors that produce results, then deploy those as agents. It's now at 40+ enterprise customers, mostly financial institutions, with one lender reporting 10x ROI within months.
Why it matters: Most AI in the customer-interaction layer has been sold on cost avoidance — fewer tickets, shorter calls. This is positioned squarely on revenue, which is a much harder claim and a much easier budget conversation. Watch whether "agents modeled on your best rep" becomes the standard framing.
Marketbridge and Meltwater go after GEO for B2B
Announced July 28: Marketbridge is combining its first-party GTM data with Meltwater's third-party narrative intelligence — drawn from analysis of 1.3 billion pieces of content daily — to help B2B teams see how AI-driven discovery shapes buying behavior. Marketbridge says it's the first B2B marketing solutions provider to fuse first-party access with Meltwater's intelligence, and will build custom solutions for Meltwater customers.
Why it matters: Generative engine optimization is graduating from conference-panel topic to a line item with vendors attached. If nobody at your company owns the question "are we cited when a buyer asks an LLM about our category," that gap is about to become visible to your CEO.
AI referral traffic keeps compounding — but the leaderboard is shifting
Fresh July data: AI referral traffic has grown 9.9x in 19 months, with the overwhelming majority still coming from ChatGPT, now a top-10 referring domain on the web. But ChatGPT's share of generative AI web traffic has slid from roughly 76% a year ago to around 53%, with Gemini past a quarter and Claude growing fastest. Separately, brands that appear in ChatGPT recommendations were reported 2.5x more likely to get a site visit within seven days.
Why it matters: If you built your AI-visibility strategy around one assistant, you built it on a moving target. Track citations across assistants, not just the loudest one — and treat AI referral as a real acquisition channel with its own conversion benchmarks, because the visit quality data suggests it deserves one.
The pattern across all six: the platforms and vendors are automating the execution layer fast, which means your leverage moves upstream — to data, positioning, and judgment. Good news if you like the interesting parts of this job.
See you tomorrow.
