State of Product reveals what AI still hasn’t solved

80% of product professionals say AI helps them ship faster, but customers aren’t seeing value any sooner. Atlassian’s State of Product 2027 explores the gains AI is delivering and the challenges that remain, from decision-making that hasn’t kept pace to gut instinct overriding customer evidence.

Alternate subject line: Ads are coming to ChatGPT image results. Is your measurement ready?

Good morning. The theme today is proof. OpenAI is building the measurement stack before it scales ads, Google is handing more advertisers a way to test incrementality, and a two-week spam update finally settled. Here is what moved.

OpenAI will test display ads next to ChatGPT image results, with a measurement stack ready on day one

OpenAI says it will test labeled display ads alongside images users generate in ChatGPT, starting later this month in the US with a limited group of pilot advertisers. The company says the ads will not influence answers. The bigger signal is the plumbing: click attribution partners include AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, Northbeam, Branch, Singular and Kochava, full-funnel partners include Fospha, Measured and INCRMNTAL, and brand suitability pilots are running with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science. Pricing, ad sizes and the pilot advertiser list have not been disclosed.

Why it matters: ChatGPT is assembling a conventional ad business, fast. If you plan to test it, line up your attribution and incrementality approach first, because the pilot is a US-only test with no published results yet.

Google opens self-serve Conversion Lift to Search and Performance Max

Eligible advertisers can now run user-based Conversion Lift studies on Search and Performance Max without going through a Google rep. The thresholds are real: at least 1,000 observed conversions and a minimum campaign budget of $5,000, plus a compatible conversion action. The test holds out a group that never sees the ads and compares it with exposed users to estimate incremental conversions. Availability can still vary by account.

Why it matters: If branded Search or PMax is taking credit for sales that would have happened anyway, this is a cheaper way to find out. Check whether your biggest campaigns clear the thresholds.

Google's September spam update is done after nearly two weeks

Google confirmed the September 2026 spam update finished rolling out on October 8. It started September 24, took about two weeks (the March, June and August spam updates each wrapped in a few days), applied globally to all languages, and came with no new named policy. Search Engine Roundtable tracked volatility around September 25 to 27, September 30, and October 4 to 6. Google says recovery for affected sites can take months.

Why it matters: The rollout is over, so your Search Console data is finally a clean baseline. Compare pre and post by page group before you touch anything, and skip the panic rewrites.

TikTok launches an AI Shopping Assistant and one-click Buy Direct checkout

TikTok announced Shopping Assistant, a conversational agent that answers questions on product details, sizing, shipping and availability, and Buy Direct, which lets users purchase from a brand in the For You feed with one click. Buy Direct is built on the Universal Commerce Protocol. Both are available to advertisers through eligibility-based testing, and TikTok says it is working with Stripe, Salesforce, Shopify and Shoplazza.

Why it matters: Discovery, questions and checkout are collapsing into one surface. If you sell products, ask your TikTok rep about test access and make sure your product feed is clean.

Google Ads now shows up to 10 AI-generated headlines and descriptions before you turn on AI Max text customization in Search campaigns. Google documented the new "Text customization asset previews" section on its help page, and Search Engine Roundtable flagged it in its October 9 recap.

Why it matters: One of the main objections to AI-written ad copy was not knowing what it would say. Preview first, then decide, and keep brand and legal in the loop.

Quick hit: Apollo unveils an AI GTM system (Sept 30)

A bit older, but still being digested in B2B. At ApolloNEXT, Apollo introduced Builder Studio (plain-English GTM tools), an Intelligence Layer and Messaging OS (signal-based outreach, including email campaigns and ad audiences). Per Apollo, the Intelligence Layer is available now, while Builder Studio and Messaging OS are coming soon. Apollo also says it serves 5 million users at more than 600,000 companies.

Why it matters: Prospecting tools are moving into marketing campaigns and ad audiences. Expect more overlap with your marketing automation stack.

That is the issue. Reply and tell us what you want more of. Until tomorrow, keep your B2B marketing less boring.
